Otto Grotewohl kommt in der Geschichte der deutschen Arbeiterbewegung eine Schlüsselposition zu. Der Sozialdemokrat wirkte nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg maßgeblich an der Zwangsvereinigung von SPD und KPD mit, obwohl er ein solches Projekt anfangs abgelehnt hatte. Außerdem segnete er die innerparteiliche Verfolgung ehemaliger Sozialdemokraten sowie die Transformation der SED in eine kommunistische Kaderpartei ab. Grotewohls Wandlung vom Kritiker zum Befürworter der Zwangsvereinigung, die zur Beseitigung der SPD in der SBZ/DDR führte, und zum linientreuen Parteisoldaten lässt sich jedoch nur dann verstehen, wenn sein Aufstieg in der Weimarer Republik, seine Erfahrungen in der NS-Zeit sowie sein politisches Handeln nach 1945 eingehend analysiert werden. In Dierk Hoffmanns Biographie werden Zwangslagen und Handlungsspielräume des Politikers, der in der zweiten deutschen Diktatur zum Ministerpräsidenten aufstieg, sein persönliches Versagen und seine politische Verstrickung lebendig.

"Princess Marie Adelheid of Lippe-Biesterfeld was a rebellious young writer who became a fervent Nazi. Heinrich Vogeler was a well-regarded artist who was to join the German Communist Party. Ludwig Roselius was a successful businessman who had made a fortune from his invention of decaffeinated coffee. What was it about the revolutionary climate following World War I that induced three such different personalities to collaborate in the production of a slim volume of poetry -- entitled Gott in mir -- about the indwelling of the divine within the human? 'August Halm: A Critical and Creative Life in Music' begins by setting the cultural stage and examining Halm's life with rich details from unpublished personal letters, diaries, notebooks, and lecture notes. Further chapters explore Halm's notion of musical logic and his proposal that the evolution of compositional technique had, by his day, culminated in three successive musical 'cultures' epitomized in Bach (fugue), Beethoven (sonata), and Bruckner (symphony). Another chapter examines, for the first time anywhere, Halm's own compositions, their motivating aesthetic premises, and their connection with late twentieth-century postmodernism. The volume closes with an assessment of Halm's significance for present-day music theory, including its branches that deal with narrativity, plot theory, embodiment, and semiotics. Halm's subject matter and creative activities ranged widely, and he aimed at maintaining a style that would be accessible and intriguing to music amateurs and music educators at all levels. Lee Rothfarb's book-written in the same spirit-will interest not only music theorists and musicologists but also composers and classroom and private music teachers. Lee Rothfarb is professor of music at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His previous publications include 'Ernst Kurth as Theorist and Analyst' and 'Ernst Kurth: Selected Writings'.

The regulation of the capital market has been in crisis since the start of the new millennium. A series of cases of fraud and company insolvencies on a scale never before experienced in Europe and overseas has resulted in the loss of billions and shattered the trust of investors in the capital market. This work examines the legal structures of the primary market and analyses possible methods of the further development of the German Investor Protection Act based on the example of the underwriting bank or rather the underwriting syndicate, which consists of several banks.

Die Schaffung von Einheit ist die wichtigste Aufgabe von Natio-nenbildungen. Dazu gehört die Konstruktion einer gemeinsamen Geschichte, gehören Herkunftsszenarien und Gründungsväter. Die abstrakte nationale Einheit wird auf diese Weise als familiäre darstellbar. Irritieren muss, dass zur Zeit nationaler Einheitsbestrebungen im deutschsprachigen Raum des 19. Jahrhun-derts in der Literatur eine gegenstrebige Bewegung zu beobachten ist: Zugehörigkeiten verwirren sich, in Familiengeschichten herrscht Unklarheit über die richtige Herkunft. Esther Kilchmann geht diesem Widerspruch nach und konfrontiert Texte von Heine, von Droste-Hülshoff und Gotthelf mit den Narrativen der sich eben etablierenden national-historischen Wissenschaften, v.a. der Germanistik.
